What is Maine's Law on Vehicle Modifications

Lift Kits
Maine law sets the maximum height, width, and length of vehicles (29-A MRS §2380 and 29-A MRA §2390). The Maine Motor Vehicle Inspection Rules detail suspension and body lift requirements: “Suspension lifts are permitted if they are manufactured by an after market manufacturer, are designed for the make and model vehicle on which they are installed, and if the kit is installed according to the manufacturer's recommendations. The entire kit must be used” (see §170.1(10)(J)(6)). “Body lifts are permitted on any vehicle that is not equipped with an anti-lock braking system, provided that they are manufactured by an after market manufacturer, are designed for the make and model vehicle on which they are installed, and the kit is installed according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. Body lifts may not use more than a three-inch spacer” (see §170.1(10)(J)(8)).

Window Tinting
29-A MRS §1916 establishes standards for window tinting. Some vehicle owners or operators are eligible to obtain a certificate of compliance from the Maine State Police stating that the vehicle meets the standards for light transmittance. The statute prohibits windows “composed of, covered by or treated with any material that is reflective.” Section 170.1(7)(C) of the Maine Motor Vehicle Inspection Rules also addresses the requirements for window tinting, treatments, and coverings.
