Statute of Limitations of Debt
What is Maine's Statute of Limitations of Debt
According to 32 MRS §11013(8), “A debt collector may not commence a collection action more than 6 years after the date of the consumer's last activity on the debt.” 32 MRS §11002(1-A) defines “collection action” as, “a lawsuit or arbitration proceeding initiated to collect a debt from a consumer.” The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau provides guidance on debt collection after the statute of limitations has passed and how long negative information appears on your credit report.
