Clippings Collection
Types of Articles Selected for the Clipping Collection
The library selects news articles about changes in Maine law, legislation being considered by the Maine Legislature, the operation of the Maine Legislature, statewide Maine elections, Maine politics, and some aspects of Maine government. For its biographical news collection, the library selects news articles written by and about current and former Maine legislators, Maine judges, Maine attorneys, Maine constitutional officers, Maine governors, and Maine delegates to the U.S. Congress.
Scope of the collection
The Maine State Law and Legislative Reference Library, and its predecessor, the Law Division of the Maine State Library, has maintained a news clippings collection since the 1930s. The collection expanded significantly in the 1960s.
Location and Retention of Paper Newspapers and Clippings
The most current issue is kept on the newspaper rack in the center of the library. Back issues of daily newspapers are clipped, then shelved for one week in the clipping area on the mezzanine. Back issues of weekly newspapers are discarded immediately after clipping. The most recent Sunday papers are kept at the Circulation Desk.
Digitized Articles
Clippings from 2002 - present have been scanned into a fully searchable database. The database is accessible on our public computers in the library.
File Folders
Clippings are assigned at least one subject heading and are filed by subject and year in cabinets on the mezzanine. Staff can help you identify headings and locate articles.
Use restrictions
Files and binders from the clippings collection may be used only in the library. Please ask a librarian for assistance.
