The Maine term limits law, effective from the November 1996 election, prohibits legislators from serving more than
four consecutive two-year terms in any one branch of the Legislature, as stated in
Maine Revised Statutes Annotated, Title 21-A, Chapter 8, Section 553
.

in accordance with recent updates to the election laws. These exceptions allow for the continuity and adaptability of legislative
representation under specific circumstances.
