SPECIAL SENTIMENT CALENDAR

 

           In accordance with House Rule 519 and Joint Rule 213, the following items:

 

Recognizing:

 

           (5-1)  the Portland Sea Dogs, whose players are playing as the Maine Whoopie Pies during their June 21, 2019 game when they host the Reading Fightin Phils at Hadlock Field in Portland.  The Maine Whoopie Pies have partnered with Wicked Whoopies and the Maine Whoopie Pie Festival, which takes place on Saturday, June 22nd in Dover-Foxcroft, to create Maine Whoopie Pie Weekend. The whoopie pie has been a favorite of Mainers for nearly a century, with the first whoopie pie in Maine being served by Labadie's Bakery in Lewiston in 1925.  The Legislature named the whoopie pie the official state treat in 2011, and the world's largest whoopie pie, weighing over 1,000 pounds, was made in South Portland in 2011.  We extend our best regards to everyone involved in the events;

In Memory of:

 

           (5-19)  Barbara Hawkes, of Westbrook.  Mrs. Hawkes was the longtime City Clerk of Westbrook and a co-owner with her husband Al of Hawkes TV Sales and Service, Event Recording Studio and the Sound Cellar at Hawkes Plaza, where she was in charge of purchasing, hiring, accounting and payroll.  She was elected Westbrook City Clerk in 1994 and served seven two-year terms. Mrs. Hawkes will be long remembered and sadly missed by her family and friends and by all those whose lives she touched;

           (5-20)  Al Hawkes, of Westbrook.  Mr. Hawkes was a country and bluegrass music legend and was considered a national treasure and an icon of the City of Westbrook.  Mr. Hawkes wrote and performed Song of Westbrook, which was named the official song of the city, on his 2015 album, I Love the State of Maine.  He formed his first band, The Al Hawkes Hillbillies, in high school and was part of Allerton and Alton, considered to be perhaps the first interracial bluegrass music duo in the country.  Through his and his wife Barbara's recording studio, Event Records, he recorded a number of noted bluegrass musicians.  He later focused on the family business, Hawkes TV Sales and Service, which operated until 1989.  He received many honors, including induction into the Maine Country Music Hall of Fame in 1980 and being named the group's Bluegrass Artist of the Year in 1983 and Folk Artist of the Year in 1984.  Mr. Hawkes will be long remembered and sadly missed by his family and friends and by his public;
