Rep. Melanie Sachs is serving her first term in the Maine House of Representatives. She is a member of the Joint Standing Committee on Energy, Utilities and Technology and the Joint Standing Committee on Taxation. She is an appointed member of the Building, Infrastructure and Housing Working Group on the Maine Climate Council.

Rep. Sachs grew up in New Sharon and graduated from Mt. Blue High School in Farmington. The first in her family to graduate from college, she received her B.A. in political science at Bates College in Lewiston and her Master’s degree in Science and Social Administration from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Sachs is currently enrolled in a post-graduate MBA program for Business Data Analytics at the University of New Hampshire.

Sachs has been a licensed clinical social worker for more than 25 years, with a focus on health and mental health care. As Executive Director, Sachs led Freeport Community Services for many years, providing direct services to Freeport and Pownal residents. She also served as Executive Director of Sexual Assault Response Services of Southern Maine, working with those affected by violence across York and Cumberland Counties.

At the local level, Sachs served six years on the Freeport Town Council. During her time on the council, she was elected twice to serve as Chair and once to serve as Vice-Chair. In the summer of 2019, Sachs chaired the Freeport Working Group to Welcome New Mainers.

Sachs has been deeply involved in the classrooms and programs of our schools, volunteering and coaching students from every town in the school district. She has been committed to directly working with many community organizations, including the Freeport Rotary, the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Freeport, Freeport Players and Freeport Family Performing Arts.

Sachs lives in Freeport with her husband, Andrew. They have two children.

Rep. Sachs is a member of the Joint Standing Committee on Energy, Utilities and Technology and the Joint Standing Committee on Taxation.

Brief description of the subject matter handled by the committee: Energy policy, including energy resources, efficiency and conservation; insulation; electric industry, including supply, transmission and distribution; natural gas industry; telecommunications industry, including mobile, telephone, Internet, broadband and cable television services; E-9-1-1; water and sewer utilities, including district charters; Public Utilities Commission; Office of the Public Advocate; Governor’s Office of Independence and Security; and Efficiency Maine Trust.

Brief description of the subject matter handled by the committee: Bureau of Revenue Services and State Board of Property Tax Review; state and local taxes; tax exemptions and credits; tax expenditure review; taxpayer relief programs; property valuation and assessment; tax increment financing; municipal revenue sharing; taxation of unorganized territories; and tree growth and other current use tax issues.
