Representative Laurie Osher

Representative Laurie Osher is serving her first term in the Maine House of Representatives.

Osher works as a Community Resilience Specialist with Eastern Maine Development Corporation. Additionally, she is a soil scientist, a building energy efficiency expert, a small business owner and a former UMaine faculty member. Her business, Osher Environment Systems, helps homeowners lower their energy use, their heating costs and their carbon dioxide contributions to the atmosphere. She moved to Maine in 1999 to be a Research and Teaching Faculty Member at the University of Maine in Orono after earning a PhD in Soil Science at the University of California, Berkeley and completing research with the Environmental Protection Agency. Prior to attending UC Berkeley, she worked for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service, United States Agency for International Development and the USDA Soil Conservation Service. Osher has served on the Orono Town Council since November of 2017.

In addition to being a champion for the environment, she is dedicated to fully funding schools, ensuring the civil rights of LGBTQ+ people, improving Maine’s health care system, creating a health care system that works for everyone, fully funding services for adults with disabilities, supporting workers, raising the minimum wage, eliminating sub-minimum wages and creating a universal paid leave system.

Osher serves on the Legislature’s Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry Committee, the Maine Climate Council’s Natural and Working Lands Working Group and the HIV Advisory Committee and is the leader of the Maine LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus. Additionally, she serves on the Council of State Governments Agricultural and Rural Affairs Committee, a coalition of neighboring states and provinces working together to address regional issues in agriculture and its impacts on the rural economy.

Osher holds a BS from Cornell University, an MS from North Carolina State University and a PhD from UC Berkeley.

She is the solo parent of 20-year-old twins, Noam and Zivi.

Brief description of the subject matter handled by the committee: Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry; agricultural fairs, products and marketing; animal control and welfare; food safety, inspection and labeling; dairy industry; pesticides regulation; nutrient management; farmland preservation; state parks, historic sites, public lands, submerged lands and coastal islands registry; Maine Land Use Planning Commission (LUPC); geological surveying and mapping; forest management, marketing, utilization, health and fire control; the Land for Maine's Future Program; and Baxter State Park.
