An Act To Clarify the Intent of the Law That Allows Retired Firefighters To Retain Their Firefighter License Plates
Emergency preamble. Whereas, acts of the Legislature do not become effective until 90 days after adjournment unless enacted as emergencies; and
Whereas, Public Law 2005, chapter 80 allows, upon approval of the fire chief, retired firefighters to retain and use their firefighter registration plates; and
Whereas, some confusion exists as to whether this law allows firefighters who retired prior to the effective date of the law to retain their registration plates; and
Whereas, public policy demands that ambiguity in the law be removed as quickly as possible; and
Whereas, in the judgment of the Legislature, these facts create an emergency within the meaning of the Constitution of Maine and require the following legislation as immediately necessary for the preservation of the public peace, health and safety; now, therefore,
Sec. 1. PL 2005, c. 80, §2 is enacted to read:
Sec. 2. Application. This Act applies to all retired firefighters, regardless of the date of retirement.
Sec. 2. Retroactivity. This Act applies retroactively to September 17, 2005.
Emergency clause. In view of the emergency cited in the preamble, this Act takes effect when approved.
