| Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows: |

| | Sec. 1. 23 MRSA §1351, as amended by PL 1985, c. 506, Pt. B, §19, | is further amended by adding after the 3rd paragraph a new | paragraph to read: |

| | Where there is a clearly marked crosswalk not located at an | intersection, a municipality, at its own expense, may erect a | sign indicating that there is a crosswalk and that traffic | must stop when pedestrians are present on the crosswalk.__The | Department of Transportation shall adopt rules establishing | the appropriate construction, installation and dimensions of | these signs.__Rules adopted pursuant to this paragraph are | routine technical rules as defined in Title 5, chapter 375, | subchapter 2-A. |

| | This bill permits municipalities to install stop signs in | crosswalks that are not located at an intersection. The | Department of Transportation is directed to establish rules | regarding the appropriate construction, installation and | dimensions of the signs. |
