(4-1) On motion of Representative MOONEN of Portland, the following House Order: (H.O. 8)
WHEREAS, each elected member of the House of Representatives is bound by the Legislative Code of Ethics; and
WHEREAS, Representative Lucas Lanigan of Sanford was recently charged with domestic violence aggravated assault for allegedly assaulting his intimate partner by strangling her; and
WHEREAS, domestic violence aggravated assault is a Class B felony crime that is punishable by up to 10 years in prison; and
WHEREAS, Representative Lanigan, following an arraignment on October 30, 2024, was released on bail and ordered to appear again in court in March 2025; and
WHEREAS, questions concerning Representative Lanigan’s conduct threaten to cast a shadow over all of the work of the 132nd Legislature; and
WHEREAS, the House Committee on Ethics exists for the purpose of investigating potential violations of the Legislative Code of Ethics; now, therefore, be it
ORDERED, that the House Committee on Ethics convene to further investigate the allegations against Representative Lanigan; and be it further
ORDERED, that the House Committee on Ethics report back to the House of Representatives with the results of its investigation, as well as any recommendations for action, no later than one month after the convening of the committee.
