In Memory of: (5-15) Ellery "Arms" Labbe, of Fort Kent. Mr. Labbe was a veteran of the National Guard, serving for 23 years. He owned and operated with his sons Nadeau's House of Furniture from 1976 to 2012. He was a member of the Fort Kent Lions Club for 60 years, of which he was a past president. He was a founding member of the Senior Citizens Center and was active with the School Board, Fort Kent Golf Club and Senior College. In 2012, he received an honorary degree from the University of Maine at Fort Kent for his community achievements and was also named Citizen of the Year. He was a parishioner of the Roman Catholic Parish of St. John Vianney and served on the parish council and with various committees. Mr. Labbe will be long remembered and sadly missed by his wife of 69 years, Muriel, his family and friends and all those whose lives he touched;

(5-16) Paul Vermel, of Scarborough. Mr. Vermel was a music conductor, teacher and mentor known for his skill and passion. Born in Paris in 1924, he came to the United States in 1949 to study at The Juilliard School in New York City as a student of Jean Morel. Over the next decade, he became a United States citizen, served on Julliard's faculty and was the conductor of a symphony orchestra and orchestral society in New York. He was also the music director of the summer orchestra and musical theater program at Green Mansions in the Berkshires and made his Broadway debut as assistant conductor of Gian-Carlo Menotti's "The Saint of Bleeker Street." His career brought him next to California, where he was both a conductor and college professor. He moved back to the East Coast in 1966 to lead Music in Maine, a Title III program that brought chamber music to elementary and middle schools across the State. A year later, he was tapped to lead the Portland Symphony Orchestra. Founded the same year Mr. Vermel was born, the orchestra had been a mostly volunteer, community orchestra before he became conductor. He helped the orchestra to become more professional and think big. He also had a role in forming what became the Portland String Quartet. He served with the orchestra until 1975, then moved to Illinois to teach music at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and conduct the University Symphony and Champaign-Urbana Symphony. In retirement, he lived in the Chicago area, where he continued to conduct and teach privately before returning to Maine in 2014 and settling in Scarborough. Mr. Vermel will be long remembered and sadly missed by his wife of 48 years, Carolyn Paulin, his family and friends and all those whose lives he touched;

(5-17) Grace Campanella, of Kennebunk. Ms. Campanella, as a student-athlete attending Kennebunk High School, won Maine's singles tennis state championship as a sophomore and a junior and was the overwhelming favorite to win the state title again before the coronavirus pandemic led to the cancellation of the 2020 spring sports season. She accepted an athletic scholarship to play NCAA Division I tennis at the University of Rhode Island, where she planned to get a degree in animal science and become a veterinarian. She volunteered at Safe Haven Animal Rescue in Wells and the Animal Welfare Society in Kennebunk and was an intern at the Kennebunk Veterinary Hospital. Ms. Campanella will be long remembered and sadly missed by her family and friends and all those whose lives she touched;

(5-18) Ernie Brien, of Buxton. A high school three-sport athlete, Mr. Brien was also the 1938 Maine Golden Gloves middleweight boxing champion. Enlisting in the United States Army National Guard in August 1940, he served as a clerk at Fort Williams in Maine. During World War II, he attended Infantry Officer Candidate School and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army Reserve. In 1944 in Europe, he commanded an infantry company in the 51st Armored Infantry Battalion of the 4th Armored Division, which spearheaded General Patton's Third Army. For his service in the Battle of the Bulge, he was awarded the Silver Star Medal. He was twice awarded the Bronze Star Medal and was twice wounded and awarded the Purple Heart Medal. He also helped liberate of the Mittelbau-Dora concentration camp in April 1945. In June 1950, he fought in the Korean Conflict, serving with the 7th Infantry Battalion. Wounded in September 1950, he was awarded his third Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart Medal. Retiring from the Army in 1961 as a captain, Mr. Brien then worked for the United States Postal Service in Portland, serving for 20 years as a letter carrier, clerk and manager. In his community, he was an usher at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Portland for many years and was a longtime member of Harold T. Andrews American Legion Post 17 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6859. He was Co-Grand Marshal for Cape Elizabeth's 2017 Memorial Day Parade, the Grand Marshal for Portland's 2020 Veterans' Day Parade, and the Grand Marshal for Portland's 2022 Memorial Day Parade, and the Cape Elizabeth Town Council proclaimed October 5, 2020 as "Ernest Brien Day." Mr. Brien will be long remembered and sadly missed by his family and friends and all those whose lives he touched;
