JOINT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING FEBRUARY 27 TO MARCH 5, 2023 AS EATING DISORDERS AWARENESS WEEK
WHEREAS,eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes and weights; and
WHEREAS, while no one knows for sure what causes eating disorders, a growing consensus suggests that it is a range of biological, psychological and sociocultural factors; and
WHEREAS, in the United States, 9% of people will experience an eating disorder at some point in their lives;and
WHEREAS, eating disorders have the 2nd highest mortality rate of all mental health disorders;and
WHEREAS, the National Eating Disorders Association helpline has experienced a 107% increase in contacts since the start of the COVID‑19 pandemic; and
WHEREAS, Eating Disorders Awareness Week is a collective effort of individuals fromevery walk of life, including persons with lived experience, family members and friends; students, educators and coaches; and professionals, health care providers and organizations committed to raising awareness of eating disorders; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED: That We, the Members of the One Hundred and Thirty‑first Legislature now assembled in the First Regular Session, on behalf of the people we represent, take this opportunity to recognize February 27 to March 5, 2023 as Eating Disorders Awareness Weekand encourage the citizens of Maine to support the annual awareness campaign to educate the public about the realities of eating disorders and to provide hope, support and visibility to individuals and families affected by eating disorders.

(5-33) Arthur Newkirk, of Blue Hill. As a young man, Dr. Newkirk served in the Peace Corps in Korea, teaching Earth Science at a teacher's college. He later worked at Tanager Lodge, a wilderness camp, as a counselor. He became a medical doctor, completing his residency in Bangor, and moved to Blue Hill, where he practiced for 31 years. In addition to working at his practice, he taught the next generation of doctors at the Residency Program in Bangor. Dr. Newkirk will be long remembered and sadly missed by his wife of 50 years, Joyce, his family and friends and all those whose lives he touched;

(5-34) Joyce M. Keevan, of Waterville. Sister Joyce entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Lyon in 1954 and made her First Vows on August 15, 1956. Over the years, she served in various leadership positions of the community, including with the Provincial Council, the Advisory Board of St. Joseph's Child Care Center and the Sisters' Board of Directors. A teacher at heart, she succeeded in making science come alive for her students at St. Rose of Lima School in Jay, St. Michael School and the Academy of St. Joseph in South Berwick, St. John the Baptist School in Winslow and Marshwood High School in Eliot, where she spent the last 25 years of her teaching career. Sister Joyce will be long remembered and sadly missed by her family and friends and all those whose lives she touched;

(5-35) Richard Perkins, of Ogunquit. A legendary figure in Ogunquit, Mr. Perkins made the town a destination for fine dining beginning in the mid-1950s. Prince Charles, Julia Child and Bette Davis, among many other celebrities, all dined at his establishments. In 2016, Ogunquit named him as its Outstanding Citizen, and in August 2018 the Ogunquit Select Board accepted a proclamation naming him the town's Poet Laureate. Mr. Perkins will be long remembered and sadly missed by his family and friends and all those whose lives he touched;

(5-37) Robert P. White, of Caribou. Mr. White was a veteran of the United States Army. He moved to Maine in 1956, when he began teaching at Patten Academy, taught Health and Biology at Houlton High School in 1963 and served as the teaching principal at Bridgewater Classical Academy in 1964 before teaching in the Limestone School Department until his retirement from teaching in 1991. He then worked for the Caribou Shop 'n Save for twenty-five years. He was well known throughout the State for his service with sports organizations. He served in Caribou as Little League Baseball's president from 1978 to 1997. He was named the Maine Recreation and Parks Association Citizen of the Year in 1983 and the Caribou Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year in 1984. He was a forty-six year charter member of the Northern Maine Board of Approved Soccer Officials and a fifty year charter member of the Maine Association of Soccer Officials, which instituted the "Bob White Award" to recognize a soccer official's outstanding contributions to the game. In 1997, he was inducted into the University of Maine at Presque Isle's Sports Hall of Fame and was the second Maine citizen to be inducted into the National Federation of High School Officials National High School Hall of Fame. He was also extensively involved with the Maine Principals' Association, serving as the director of many regional and state wrestling meets and being honored with many awards and recognitions for his service, and served with the Aroostook League, among many other organizations. Mr. White will be long remembered and sadly missed by his wife of fifty-seven years, Karen, his family and friends and all those whose lives he touched;
