Representative Barbara A. Wood
Rep. Wood
  Representing: Portland (part)
District #38

Rep. Barb Wood is serving her first term in the Maine House of Representatives.

Wood graduated from Slippery Rock State University and then attended graduate school at the University of Maine in 1977-78, where she earned a Masters of Education in Elementary Physical Education.

Wood enjoyed a 30-year career with LL Bean. Starting as a seasonal employee, she retired as Senior Operations Manager of Distribution/Returns and was named one of Bean’s Best for her leadership skills.

In her civic life, Wood has devoted decades striving for equality and justice under the law. In 1985, she helped found the Maine Lesbian/Gay Political Alliance, now known as Equality Maine, where she continues to serve on its board. In 1988, Wood was elected to the Portland City Council and was Maine’s first openly LGBTQ+ elected official. She served on the council through 1991. No stranger to the State House, Wood spent many years working to bring anti-discrimination legislation to Augusta, ultimately seeing a bill passed in 2005. She also worked shoulder to shoulder with stakeholders across the state to see the legalization of same-sex marriage become Maine law.

Wood continues to advocate for her neighbors and community, whether it be attending planning board meetings, neighborhood meetings or panel discussions about local happenings. She also is on the board of the Equality Community Center and the board of cPort Credit Union. In her spare time, she does volunteer driving for seniors and people who are differently abled for the Independent Transportation Network.

Wood bought and restored a condemned Victorian in the West End where she has lived happily for 25 years, the past 15 with her partner, Carol.
