Representative Christopher W. Babbidge
Representing: Kennebunk (part)
District #8

Rep. Christopher Babbidge is serving his sixth non-consecutive term in the House of Representatives. He is proud of his varied background serving on the Utilities and Energy Committee and the Committee on Environment and Natural Resources in the 122nd and 123rd, respectively, and on Energy, Utilities, and Technology and the Committee on State and Local Government in the 127th Legislatures. In the 128th, 129th and 130th Legislatures, he has served on the Committee on Judiciary. He also serves on the Joint Rules Committee and the Maine Bicentennial Commission.

Babbidge is a graduate of South Portland High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Maine at Portland-Gorham. He taught history, government and culture studies to high school students for four decades, leading the KHS Social Studies Dept. for a total of 25 years. For 17 years he was an instructor, and, at one time, director, at the Muskie Summer Scholars Program at Bates College in Lewiston.

As an educator, Babbidge also pioneered beyond the classroom projects to involve students in growth activities.  He was advisor to both the Kennebunk High School Student Council and Mock Trial Team, and he created a popular umbrella group called the Political Affairs Club as a vehicle to organize hundreds of students to participate in leadership activities at various conferences and competitions. He is currently in his 39th year as an advisor for the state YMCA Youth and Government Model State Legislature Program held annually at the State House. As a leader in his profession, he has been teachers’ association president and chief negotiator, and he served as president of the Maine Council for the Social Studies.

Babbidge was an elected member of the Kennebunk Charter Commission and has served on the Kennebunk Comprehensive Plan Committee. He continues to be an active member of the community, currently serving on the Town of Kennebunk Reengagement Committee and on the Stratford Place board of directors.

He and his wife, Linda, grew up in the Portland area, started their family in Greenville and have lived in Kennebunk for 39 years. They have three daughters, all of whom attended K-12 in Kennebunk schools, and seven grandchildren.
