Providing that a spouse or child of an active duty member of the United States Armed Forces who is assigned to duty out of the State immediately following assignment to duty in the State is eligible for in-state tuition rates and fees at the University of Maine System, the Maine Community College System and Maine Maritime Academy as long as the spouse or child continue to reside in the State while enrolled in the postsecondary institution may reduce tuition and other fees being received at the higher educational institutions than would have been absent this legislation.  The impact to each postsecondary institution will depend on the number of students who take advantage of the change.
Additional costs to the Department of Education to implement the requirements of this legislation can be absorbed within existing budgeted resources.
