The bill also includes a one-time appropriation of $100,000 in fiscal year 2022-23 to the ACF to support a feasibility study conducted by the University of Maine to identify financial, physical, regulatory and cultural barriers to increasing red meat and poultry slaughter and processing in the State.
The bill also directs the ACF to create an exploratory committee to work with stakeholders to address the State's institutional capacity for animal slaughter and meat and poultry processing and report progress by January 1, 2023. Additional costs to the ACF, the Department of Corrections, the Department of Labor, the Maine Community College System and the University of Maine Cooperative Extension related to serving on the exploratory committee can be absorbed within existing budgeted resources.
