JOINT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE KENNEBEC HISTORICAL SOCIETY

WHEREAS,  the Kennebec Historical Society was founded in 1891, and its current location at the 1836 Henry Weld Fuller, Jr. House is in the county and city that host the seat of state government; and

WHEREAS,  the society is a repository of tens of thousands of historical manuscripts, photographs, scrapbooks, maps, postcards and other ephemera about Kennebec County and elsewhere that are not available in other archives; and

WHEREAS,  the society offers many community events for the public, including monthly lectures on topics touching on past events in every part of the State, with a focus in 2020 on Maine's Bicentennial; and

WHEREAS,  the society also offers research and meeting facilities, including reading areas and access to a database cataloging approximately 19,000 items and collections; and

WHEREAS,  the society's membership has increased steadily from a few dozen in 1990 to more than 540, and the scope of the society's focus has broadened to include many Kennebec County communities; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED: That We, the Members of the One Hundred and Twenty-ninth Legislature now assembled in the Second Regular Session, on behalf of the people we represent, take this opportunity to recognize the work of the Kennebec Historical Society over the last 129 years and their mission to maintain archives of the past and to disseminate knowledge of the history of Kennebec County communities.
