An Act To Require Education about the Holocaust
Sec. 1. 20-A MRSA §4710-C is enacted to read:
§ 4710-C. Instruction in the Holocaust
Instruction in the Holocaust must be provided in and required for graduation from all elementary and secondary schools, both public and private. The commissioner shall develop the curriculum and course of study on the Holocaust to be used by a school in carrying out the purposes of this section. For purposes of this section, "Holocaust" is the program of discriminatory and genocidal laws, policies or actions targeted against discrete groups of individuals based on race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, physical disability or national origin, from January 1, 1933 to December 31, 1945, in Nazi Germany or in any European country allied with or occupied by Nazi Germany.
SUMMARY
This bill requires instruction in the Holocaust developed by the Commissioner of Education to be provided in and required for graduation from all elementary and secondary schools, both public and private.
