An Act To Improve the Effectiveness of Notices Required by State Law

Sec. 1. 1 MRSA §601,  as amended by PL 2013, c. 368, Pt. YYYY, §1, is further amended by adding at the end a new paragraph to read:

This section is repealed January 1, 2018.

Sec. 2. 1 MRSA §602,  as corrected by RR 1997, c. 2, §2, is amended by adding at the end a new paragraph to read:

This section is repealed January 1, 2018.

Sec. 3. 1 MRSA §603,  as amended by PL 2017, c. 19, §1, is further amended by adding at the end a new paragraph to read:

This section is repealed July 1, 2018.

Sec. 4. 1 MRSA §604  is enacted to read:

§ 604.  Posting of legal notices

Notwithstanding any other provision of law, beginning July 1, 2018, a legal notice may not be required to be published in a newspaper but must be posted on a publicly accessible website that must be maintained by the Department of Administrative and Financial Services.

SUMMARY

This bill amends the law regarding legal notices to prohibit, beginning July 1, 2018, any requirement that a legal notice must be published in a newspaper and to require, beginning on that date, a legal notice to be posted on a publicly accessible website maintained by the Department of Administrative and Financial Services.
