An Act Requiring Communication of Mammographic Breast Density Information to Patients

Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows:

Sec. 1. 24-A MRSA §2745-A, sub-§5  is enacted to read:

5 Communication regarding breast density.   Beginning October 1, 2017, each screening mammogram report provided to a patient and other information provided to the patient describing the results of a screening mammogram must include information about breast density, based on a breast imaging reporting and data system established by a national radiology association. The report must include the following notice: "If your mammogram demonstrates that you have dense breast tissue, which could hide small abnormalities, you might benefit from supplementary screening tests, which may include a breast ultrasound screening, a breast magnetic resonance imaging examination, molecular breast imaging (digital mammogram) or other screening recommendation, depending on your individual risk factors. A report of your mammography results, which contains information about your breast density, has been sent to your physician's office, and you should contact your physician if you have any questions or concerns about this report."
