An Act To Reform Maine's Motor Vehicle Inspection Guidelines
Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows:
Sec. 1. 29-A MRSA §1756, sub-§1, as enacted by PL 1993, c. 683, Pt. A, §2 and affected by Pt. B, §5, is amended to read:
1. Inspection standards. Equipment subject to inspection must:
A. Be in good working order;
B. Be safely attached or secured to the chassis or body of the vehicle;
C. Be mechanically safe;
D. Not pose a hazard to the occupant of the vehicle or to the general public; and
E. Meet the standards set forth in rules adopted by the Chief of the State Police.
A vehicle may not fail an inspection under this section for an aesthetic reason or a minor mechanical defect. A vehicle may fail an inspection only for a defect that reasonably affects the safety of the vehicle.
SUMMARY
This bill provides that a motor vehicle may not fail its annual inspection for aesthetic reasons or for minor mechanical defects. A vehicle may fail the inspection only for defects that reasonably affect the safety of the vehicle.
