An Act To Allow an Order Not To Resuscitate To Be Presented in the Form of an Indelible Mark

Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows:

Sec. 1. 32 MRSA §86, sub-§4  is enacted to read:

4 Indelible "do not resuscitate" mark.   A person licensed to provide emergency medical treatment may not start resuscitation on a person requiring emergency medical treatment when an order not to resuscitate is presented in the following form as an indelible mark on the chest of the person requiring emergency medical treatment: "DNR NO CPR".

Sec. 2. Maine Emergency Medical Services protocol. The Medical Direction and Practices Board shall update the Maine Emergency Medical Services protocol as defined in the Maine Revised Statutes, Title 32, section 83, subsection 19 to incorporate the provisions of Title 32, section 86, subsection 4.

SUMMARY

This bill prohibits emergency medical treatment providers from starting resuscitation on a person when an order not to resuscitate is presented in the form of an indelible mark on the person's chest.
