An Act To Reduce Penalties for Violations of the Motor Vehicle Inspection Laws
Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows:
Sec. 1. 29-A MRSA §1770, as enacted by PL 1993, c. 683, §2, is amended to read:
§ 1770. Penalties
1. General penalty. Notwithstanding Title 17-A, and unless otherwise specified, a violation of this chapter is a Class E crime, punishable by a fine of not less than $25 nor more than $500 or by imprisonment for not more than 30 days, or by both , except that a violation of this subchapter is punishable by a fine of not less than $25 nor more than $100 for the first offense and a fine of not less than $25 nor more than $250 for each subsequent offense.
2. Traffic infraction. A violation of the rules adopted by the Chief of the State Police pertaining to this subchapter is a traffic infraction subject to a forfeiture fine of not less than $25 nor more than $100 for the first offense and a fine of not less than $25 nor more than $250 for each subsequent offense.
