This bill
requires the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to create a
stakeholder group to evaluate options for adapting to the most likely impacts
of climate change. Further, the bill directs DEP to focus on the assessment
by the University of Maine which concluded that climate change is already
occurring. The DEP is to report recommendations along with proposed
legislation by February 27, 2010. The additional costs to DEP associated with
the development of the stakeholder group and other duties can be absorbed
within the existing budgeted resources. However, the DEP is authorized to
accept public and private funds for the costs incurred to prepare the report.
If funds are forthcoming, the DEP may hire a consultant to assist with the
economic impact study. If funds are not secured, the tasks will be completed
by the department. |
|
Additional costs
to the University of Maine System associated with providing scientific and
technical expertise, if requested, can be absorbed within existing budgeted
resources. |
