An Act To Abolish the State Board of Education
Sec. 1. 20-A MRSA c. 5, as amended, is repealed.
Sec. 2. Department of Education to conduct review. The Department of Education shall review the powers and duties of the State Board of Education and the statutory provisions relating to the State Board of Education and prepare legislation to transfer the powers and duties of the State Board of Education to other agencies in anticipation of the dissolution of the State Board of Education. The Department of Education shall submit its report and recommended legislation required by this Act to the Joint Standing Committee on Education and Cultural Affairs by December 2, 2009. The committee is authorized to introduce a bill related to this report to the Second Regular Session of the 124th Legislature at the time of submission of the report.
Sec. 3. Effective date. Section 1 of this Act takes effect July 1, 2010.
