The Department of
Education will require Fund for a Healthy Maine allocations totaling
$1,508,566 in fiscal year 2008-09 for the costs associated with reimbursing
local school units who provide free breakfasts to those students who are
eligible to receive free or reduced-price meals under the National School
Lunch Program. |

This
bill includes a Fund for a Healthy Maine allocation of $1,423,566 in fiscal
year 2008-09 to the School Breakfast program for the cost of providing free
breakfasts to those students who are eligible to receive free or
reduced-price meals under the National School Lunch Program. This cost estimate is based on the
following assumptions: 1) 74,300
students being eligible for the free breakfast program; 2) a total per
breakfast cost of $1.44; 3) 175 school days, and 4) a total federal
reimbursement of $17,299,676. The
actual cost in fiscal year 2008-09 may be higher or lower depending on actual
experience. |

The
School Breakfast program within the Department of Education will require an
additional one-time allocation of $85,000 in fiscal year 2008-09 for the
costs associated with making system modifications in order to reimburse local
school units. |
|
|
|
Based
on all enacted legislation and revenue forecasts through the end of the 1st
Regular Session of the 123rd Legislature, the available balance in the Fund
for a Healthy Maine at the end of fiscal year 2008-09 is expected to be
$4,158,841. |
