This legislation
allows blended sentencing for certain juveniles convicted as adults and
sentenced to imprisonment if the juvenile has not attained 16 years of age at
the time of sentencing. Prior to age
18 the time will be served in a juvenile facility. Once the juvenile reaches 18 the remaining
time will be served at an adult correctional facility. A juvenile facility costs $343.37 per day
more than an adult facility, or $125,330 more per year. This type of sentence occurs once every two
years which implies an annualized cost of $62,665 to the system if, on
average, an offender turns 17 at the time the sentence begins. |
