Depending on the details of the report that the Chief of the Maine State Police is required to submit to the Legislature, the Department of Public Safety estimates that at least 2 additional positions will be required and significant operating costs will be incurred to implement additional DNA collection and data base requirements. Estimated Department of Public Safety annual start-up costs to the General Fund and the Highway Fund would be approximately $250,000 and $374,000, respectively. Additional costs to the Department of Corrections to collect DNA from current prisoners can be absorbed within its existing budgeted resources. |
