Resolve, To Provide for a Careful Examination of the Motor Fuel Taxes
Sec. 1. Examination of motor fuel taxes. Resolved: That the Department of Transportation and the Department of Administrative and Financial Services shall examine how motor fuel taxes could be restructured to eliminate or change the current indexing system, including, but not limited to, a restructuring of the taxes in a manner that would replace some or all of the current taxes with some form of a sales or other tax that relates to the price of the fuels. The departments shall consult with other appropriate departments and experts in developing recommendations for restructuring motor fuel taxes, including 2 Legislators from the Joint Standing Committee on Transportation, one Senator appointed by the President of the Senate and one Representative appointed by the Speaker of the House. The departments jointly shall report their findings together with any suggested legislation to the Joint Standing Committee on Transportation no later than January 15, 2008. The Joint Standing Committee on Transportation may submit legislation relating to the motor fuel taxes to the Second Regular Session of the 123rd Legislature.
