An Act To Protect School Athletic Contest Officials

Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows:

Sec. 1. 17-A MRSA §207, sub-§4  is enacted to read:

4   Notwithstanding subsection 3, an assault against a school athletic contest official that occurs within the confines or immediate vicinity of an athletic facility at which the school athletic contest official is acting or was acting in that person's capacity of a school athletic contest official is a Class C crime punishable by a fine of up to $10,000 and imprisonment of not more than 3 years. For purposes of this subsection, "school athletic contest official" means a person acting in the capacity of an umpire, referee, judge, timekeeper, coach, instructor, administrator or other position, including an assistant to any such person, while that person is actively engaged in the officiating, conducting or supervising of a public or private school contest. "School athletic contest official" does not include a person participating in the sport as a team member or contestant.
