An Act To Address Eating Disorders in Maine
Sec. 1. Eating disorders initiative. The Department of Health and Human Services, Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention shall begin an eating disorders initiative to provide education and assistance to residents of the State suffering from eating disorders. The initiative must be designed to reduce the prevalence and long-term emotional and medical consequences of eating disorders and increase the cost-effectiveness of appropriate treatment, public awareness and coordination of treatment resources. The department shall report to the Joint Standing Committee on Health and Human Services by May 1, 2008 on the implementation of the eating disorders initiative.
Sec. 2. Appropriations and allocations. The following appropriations and allocations are made.

Initiative: Appropriates funds for an ongoing eating disorder initiative including $50,000 that must be used for learning collaborative costs, $28,000 for 2 Americorps volunteers and $60,000 to contract a health planner to coordinate the initiative.

SUMMARY
This bill requires the Department of Health and Human Services, through the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, to create an initiative to provide education and assistance to residents suffering from eating disorders and submit a report to the Joint Standing Committee on Health and Human Services by May 1, 2008. This bill also provides funding of $138,000 per year for an eating disorder initiative to provide education and assistance to Maine residents suffering from eating disorders.
