This
bill authorizes, under certain circumstances, a 1 cent increase in the sales
and use tax dedicated to the Department of Corrections. The increase in Other Special Revenue
Funds revenue depends on how many county districts choose to turn jail
responsibility over to the state and submit themselves to the 1 cent
tax. Maine Revenue Services will
require additional General Fund appropriations to administer a county sales
and use tax. This estimate assumes
those provisions of the bill will not become effective until the passage of
the implementing legislation required pursuant to Section 6 of the bill. This bill also provides a General Fund
appropriation of $1,000,000 to each of up to eight districts spread out over
as many as 5 years. The General Fund
amount to be provided to a county district is unknown at this time. |
