Providing unemployment benefits to school bus drivers and janitorial staff employed in public schools in between two academic years is a mandate to local school administrative units, a majority of which are direct reimbursement employers.  The Department of Labor has determined that approximately 1,600 school bus drivers and 2,940 janitors were employed by Educational Services establishments as of September 2004.  Assuming that all of the 4,540 school bus drivers and janitors were employed by local school administrative units, and the weekly unemployment benefit was $203.00 for school bus drivers and $288.00 for janitors, the total cost to the local units would be $9,371,000.
