The
Education in the Unorganized Territory program within the Department of
Education may require additional General Fund appropriations beginning in
fiscal year 2005-06 as a result of the increase in the tuition rate. However, because all General Fund
expenditures from this program are fully reimbursed by the Unorganized
Territory Education and Services Fund, there is no net fiscal impact to the
State as a result of this legislation. |

Increasing
the amount of tuition required to be paid for each student from the
unorganized territory attending public secondary schools in Maine will result
in an increase in the tax collected through the Unorganized Territory
Educational and Services Tax which is levied on all nonexempt real and
personal property located in the Unorganized Territory Tax District. The Department of Education has estimated
the additional cost for 398 secondary students from the unorganized territory
currently attending public secondary schools to be $317,405. |
