An Act To Care for Families

Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows:

Sec. 1. 26 MRSA §636 is enacted to read:

§636.__Family sick leave

1.__Definitions.__As used in this section, unless the context otherwise indicates, the following terms have the following meanings.

A.__"Employer" means a public or private employer with 25 or more employees.

B.__"Immediate family member" means an employee's child, spouse or parent.

C.__"Paid leave" means time away from work by an employee for which the employee receives compensation, and is limited to sick time, vacation time, compensatory time and leave that is provided as an aggregate amount for use at the discretion of the employee for any of these same purposes.__ "Paid leave" does not include paid short-term or long-term disability, catastrophic leave or similar types of benefits.
