Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows:

 
Sec. 1. 20-A MRSA §4722, sub-§2, ¶¶D and E, as enacted by PL 1983, c.
859, Pt. C, §§5 and7, are amended to read:

 
D. Science, including at least one year of laboratory
study--2 years; and

 
E. Fine arts, which may include art, music, forensics or
drama--one year.; and

 
Sec. 2. 20-A MRSA §4722, sub-§2, ¶F is enacted to read:

 
F.__Instruction in the legislative process.

 
Sec. 3. 20-A MRSA §4730 is enacted to read:

 
§4730. Instruction in legislative process

 
The secondary school course of study must include instruction
in the legislative process, which a student must complete
satisfactorily in order to graduate from a secondary school.__The
instruction must provide the student with an understanding of the
legislative process and include a requirement that the student
follow through the legislative process a piece of legislation
sponsored by a local Legislator.__The student must give an oral,
written or electronic presentation on the legislative process and
the final disposition of the piece of legislation.

 
SUMMARY

 
This bill requires every high school student to receive
instruction in the legislative process in order to graduate. The
instruction must provide the student with an understanding of the
legislative process and include a requirement that the student
follow through the legislative process a piece of legislation
sponsored by a local legislator. The student must give an oral,
written or electronic presentation on the process and the final
disposition of the piece of legislation.
