Rep. Deqa Dhalac is serving her first term in the Maine House of Representatives. She is a member of the State and Local Government Committee.

In 2021, more than 30 years after first coming to the U.S. to flee the civil war in Somalia, she became the first Somali-American mayor in the country. She is also currently serving on the South Portland City Council, and she is the co-founder of Cross-Cultural Community Services and the assistant executive director at Gateway Community Services in Portland.

In addition to these roles, Rep. Dhalac also serves on the boards of Mercy Hospital, I’m Your Neighbor Books, Somali Community Center of Maine, Advisory Committee and the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Population Health.

Rep. Dhalac holds master's degrees in social work and development policy and practice from the University of New England and the University of New Hampshire, respectively.

Since 2008, Rep. Dhalac has lived in the West End of South Portland, where she raised her three children, all of whom attended South Portland public schools.
