           (5-7)  Rebecca Book, of Caribou, a student at Northern Maine Community College, who was chosen to represent Maine as a nominee to the All-USA Community College Academic Team sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa, USA Today and the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. We extend our congratulations and best wishes;

           (5-8)  Merilda Leona Plourde, of Madawaska, on her retirement after a 50-year career teaching in Madawaska.  Mrs. Plourde served in the Madawaska School Department as a physical education and health teacher from 1972 until her retirement in 2011.  In addition to teaching, she coached teams in sports as varied as field hockey, basketball, soccer and volleyball, and she also served as a referee.  An innovative educator, she led advanced classes on hikes and camping trips throughout Aroostook County, even hiking Katahdin Mountain.  After officially retiring, Mrs. Plourde nevertheless continued to teach, most recently as a classroom teacher in the Madawaska Middle/High School Learning, Independent Function and Transition Program.  We extend our appreciation and best wishes;

           (5-9)  John Shea, of Auburn, a senior at Edward Little High School and a player on the boys basketball team, who has been named Mr. Maine Basketball for 2022 by the Maine Association of Basketball Coaches.  We extend our congratulations and best wishes;

           (5-10)  Maxwell Burtis, of Brunswick, who has earned the distinction of being named Salutatorian of the 2022 graduating class of the University of Maine.  We extend our congratulations and best wishes;

           (5-11)  Michael J. Ward, of Oxford, who is retiring as Chief of the Oxford Police Department after 35 years of public service.  Chief Ward entered law enforcement in 1987, first working for the Androscoggin County Sheriff's department before moving to the Town of Mechanic Falls Police Department, where he worked from 1998 to 2003.  In 2004, he transferred to the Oxford Police Department, and he was appointed chief in 2018. We extend our congratulations and best wishes;

In Memory of:

 

           (5-13)  Robert Gorham, of Buxton.  A recently retired lieutenant of Buxton Fire and Rescue, Mr. Gorham had served his community for 39 years.  Toward the end of his career, he was involved with the fire-police unit, maintaining safety at emergency scenes.  Mr. Gorham will be long remembered and sadly missed by his family and friends and all those whose lives he touched;

           (5-14)  Florence Cecilia Hludik, of Wells.  In their early years together, Mrs. Hludik and her husband Francis owned several Howard Johnson's Restaurants and a Dunkin Donuts in Pennsylvania, New York and Connecticut, and they owned and operated the well-known Howard Johnson's in Wells from the late 1940s until 1982.  For many years, she was the treasurer of the St. Mary's Altar Sodality.  At church, she organized and helped to prepare many suppers, receptions and special meals.  Mrs. Hludik will be long remembered and sadly missed by her family and friends and all those whose lives she touched;
