Representative Deane Rykerson

Rep. Deane Rykerson is serving his third term in the Maine House of Representatives. He is a returning member of the Energy, Utilities and Technology Committee and a member of the Joint Standing Committee on Labor and Housing..

Rykerson grew up hiking and sailing in the Hudson River Valley with a mother from Ecuador and a father from Dodge City, Kansas. With a Regent's scholarship, he graduated from the State University at Stony Brook with a major in history. He then attended the Boston Architectural College and earned a bachelor’s of architecture degree after seven years of night classes while working at several Boston architectural firms.

Rykerson earned his architectural license and became active in the Boston Society of Architects, serving as workshop organizer for its Historic Resources Committee and chair of the Committee on the Environment. After receiving a master of design studies degree at Harvard University, he started his architectural firm, Rykerson Architecture.

Rykerson moved to Kittery Point in 2002 and designed a sustainable house and office where he currently works. He is married to Wendy Pomeroy, a landscape designer and artist, and has two sons a daughter and one grandson. Rykerson enjoys sailing, hiking, biking, making things and playing a variety of stringed instruments.

Rep. Rykerson is a member of the Joint Standing Committee on Energy, Utilities and Technology, a member of the Joint Standing Committee on Labor and Housing and a member of the House Standing Committee on Bills in the Second Reading.

Brief description of the subject matter handled by the committee: Energy policy, including energy resources, efficiency and conservation; insulation; electric industry, including supply, transmission and distribution; natural gas industry; telecommunications  industry, including mobile, telephone, Internet, broadband and cable television services;  E-9-1-1; water and sewer utilities, including district charters; Public Utilities Commission; Office of the Public Advocate; Governor’s Office of Independence and Security; and Efficiency Maine Trust.

Brief description of the subject matter handled by the committee: Department of Labor; wage and hour laws; working conditions, including health and safety; unemployment compensation; workers' compensation; labor relations; collective bargaining; private sector retirement; Workers’ Compensation Board; Maine Labor Relations Board; retirement eligibility and benefits for state and municipal employees, including teachers; judicial and legislative retirement systems; Maine Public Employees Retirement System; insulation; Maine State Housing Authority; landlord-tenant laws; affordable housing; homelessness; housing safety; building codes; public services.
