Representative James R. Handy
  Representing: Lewiston (part)
District #58

Rep. Jim Handy is serving his sixth non-consecutive term in the Maine House.

Born and raised in Lewiston, he has been an active member of his community. Handy is an experienced legislator and policymaker, having served Lewiston in the Maine House from 1983 to 1992 and in the Senate from 1992 to 1994. He also served 18 consecutive years on the Lewiston School Committee, from 1997 to 2015. He is on the board of directors at Literacy Volunteers–Androscoggin and has served on the board of directors of Healthy Androscoggin, L/A Arts and Androscoggin Head Start.

Handy worked several jobs to put himself through college and graduated cum laude from the University of Southern Maine with a degree in political science.

He and his spouse are the parents of three grown children, all of whom graduated from Lewiston High School. He is employed by L.L. Bean. Handy has lived at 9 Maplewood Road since 1989.

Brief description of the subject matter handled by the committee: Business regulation, including automobile and fuel sales; retail pricing; franchising; advertising; real estate practices; professional and occupational licensing; consumer protection; Finance Authority of Maine (FAME), including student assistance programs at Finance Authority of Maine; economic development; economic planning and development agencies; venture capital and trade programs; opportunity zones; import competition; product marketing; research and development; technology commercialization; technology transfers; tourism; and defense facility conversion.
