|
Increasing the
age of children with a disability in the care or custody of the Department of
Health and Human Services (DHHS) or the Department of Corrections (DOC) who
are entitled to receive a free, appropriate public education from under the
age of 20 to under the age of 22 will increase the total cost of public
education from kindergarten to grade 12 and the State's share of that cost
beginning in fiscal year 2023-24. The
fiscal impact cannot be determined and will depend on the number of students
entering or leaving residential care or the custody of DHHS and/or the
DOC. Funding to provide these services
up to age 20 is included in the targeted education funds component of the
total cost of education from kindergarten to grade 12 pursuant to Title 20-A,
section 15689-A, subsection 1. Whether
that funding is sufficient to cover the additional children through age 22 is
not known at this time. If adding the additional children causes the total
cost to provide services to exceed the amount of funding budgeted, local
school administrative units will be responsible for 100% of the additional
costs. |
