Sec. 1. Task force. Resolved: That the Secretary of State shall convene a task force to study the most cost-effective and efficient ways to enhance Maine driver's licenses and identification cards in order to comply with the federal REAL ID Act of 2005. The Secretary of State shall invite the participation of interested parties, including but not limited to experts on immigration law, advocates for the rights of immigrant populations, law enforcement officials and the Attorney General. The Secretary of State shall submit a report on the results of the study, including any necessary implementing legislation, to the joint standing committee of the Legislature having jurisdiction over transportation matters no later than December 3, 2008. After receipt of the report, the joint standing committee is authorized to report out a bill to the First Regular Session of the 124th Legislature.

This amendment strikes the bill as amended by Committee Amendment "A" and replaces it with a resolve that directs the Secretary of State to convene a task force to study the most cost-effective and efficient ways to enhance Maine driver's licenses and identification cards in order to comply with the federal REAL ID Act of 2005. The Secretary of State is directed to submit a report on the results of the study, including any necessary implementing legislation, to the joint standing committee of the Legislature having jurisdiction over transportation matters no later than December 3, 2008.
