For almost two centuries, portions of Maine were governed by the acts and resolves of the Massachusetts General Court. Provisions enacted or passed ranged from general laws to specific acts and resolves affecting a single locality or individual. Many of these laws remain in effect in Maine today. The Old Massachusetts Laws collection provides authoritative copies of early Massachusetts acts and resolves with finding aids highlighting those provisions particularly applicable to the Province and District of Maine.

 
   

 

  


Massachusetts Laws and Resolves, 1806-1820
(including those applicable to the District of Maine)

 
This collection contains the Laws and Resolves of the General Court of Massachusetts for the political years 1806-7 through 1819-20. Because the political year in Massachusetts ran for one year beginning in May, the last session included here actually began in January 1820. This was the final session of the Massachusetts General Court before the effective date of Maine statehood in March 1820, which removed the District of Maine from Massachusetts and established it as a separate state.

Lists showing the members of the General Court for each political year will generally be found at the beginning of the Resolves for the May session. At the end of each session of Resolves will be found a Roll of state expenditures. Messages between the Governor and the chambers of the General Court are also included with the Resolves.
